PTSD
Client Challenge:
An independent couple, successful in their business as well as highly respected in their community and busy in their charitable causes, were suddenly left emotionally paralysed by a life changing traumatic burglary in their own home.
The couple were attacked and forced to comply with their intruders.
Suffering from a combination of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, fear of their safety throughout the day and night, exhausted by constantly reliving their trauma and a heightened sense of alertness, this couple needed support to rebuild their lives.
They did not feel safe in their own home even after moving to a new area. Understandably the trauma had begun to impact all aspects of life from their social life, family life, health, sleep and even their overall well being.

How We Helped:

It was a year after the incident that Darpna was introduced to this couple who were by this point in time, living life in a constant state of fear and anxiety through the day and night.
Understanding the clients’ perspective and working with them in joint sessions and individually on their respective needs, it was possible to systematically work through their personal and difficult emotions, concerns and fears.
Multiple techniques and a variety of skills were taught, to enable the clients to feel secure and relaxed at home both during the day and night. With this their self belief and confidence to overcome their trauma grew and they began to re-live their busy and fulfilled lifestyle as independently as they had done before the trauma.

Results:

Clients are now happy and feel safe in their home.
Their relationship together has evolved and they have a deeper understanding of each other and their differing needs.
They are no longer reliant on their children and are able to confidently travel alone and can live independently.
Their health and well being has significantly improved and they are now sleeping better, exercising regularly and eating more mindfully.
Family life is now also back on track and they are both enjoying a busy social life such as going to concerts, the cinema, charitable events and hosting parties.
Most significantly, they have rebuilt themselves emotionally and thus their beautiful home is a peaceful sanctuary for them, their children and their grandchildren.
